First Inspection Under Victorian Regulations

Under Victorian legislation, all residential swimming pools and spas containing water deeper than 300 mm must have their safety barrier inspected and certified by a registered building inspector. The initial inspection is the formal statutory assessment following your pool or spa registration with your local municipal council.

When you book an initial inspection with Pool Compliance Victoria, a registered building inspector attends your property to systematically evaluate the entire perimeter barrier against the applicable Australian Standard specified in your council registration letter.

What We Inspect On Site

Our inspectors verify compliance across all critical safety aspects mandated by the regulations:

• Barrier Height: Minimum 1.2 metres height measured from the approach side ground level.
• Bottom Clearances: Maximum 100 mm gap between the bottom of the barrier and finished ground level.
• Gate Operation: Gates must swing outward away from the pool area, be self-closing from any open position, and self-latching automatically upon closing.
• Latching Mechanism: Minimum 1.5 metres above ground level, or shielded in accordance with standard requirements.
• Non-Climbable Zone (NCZ): A 900 mm quadrant on the outside of the barrier clear of climbable objects, tree branches, steps, pots, or structures.
• Boundary Fences: Where boundary fences form part of the barrier, they must satisfy height (minimum 1.8 metres on inside) and non-climbable requirements.
• Windows & Doors: Direct access doors from a dwelling into the pool enclosure are strictly regulated or prohibited depending on the installation date.
